BEYOND THE CURTAINS

MELISSA

ACCEPTED & INCLUDED

Hi everyone, I'm Melissa! I'm excited to tell you about DramaWay Productions, and how it is a space where you can find confidence in yourself, build amazing connections, and feel accepted for who you are. I have been a part of DramaWay for over 9  years, and I love the Theatre and Social and Life Skills Programs that I attend (I never want to miss even a single session)! I feel really safe in my DramaWay classes, and it makes me feel good that all the facilitators and other participants really get me. I know that the people I’ve met at DramaWay are true friends. Plus, one of my favourite parts of DramaWay is that all the helpers are smart and good looking I might add (especially the male helpers) but of course I love and appreciate everyone equally!

Before I attended DramaWay, I wasn’t very comfortable about speaking in public, and I would sometimes hesitate before going up to the front of my class to speak in front of everyone. But after just one year in the Mississauga Theatre program, I became so much more confident presenting at school and even grew to really enjoy it. And now, all my teachers are impressed that I volunteer to go up first!

This increased confidence has also helped me in my community work. I’ve been doing a Co-op at my school for the last 5 years, this placement has been at my local church and includes lots of tasks and duties like cleaning, administrative help, decoration set ups, and gardening work. I’ve volunteered at places like Community Living Mississauga, various non-profit organizations, the City of Mississauga, and our local Habitat for Humanity store. I also volunteer to walk our neighbour’s dog (one of my absolutely favourite things to do!). On top of this, I’ve been really involved in community activities like Motionball and numerous Marathon of Sport events in support of Special Olympics Canada.

The skills I’ve learned at DramaWay have helped me in so many different ways, learning my lines and my dance moves in Theatre classes have helped me feel confident and responsible for my own learning, and in Social and Life Skills I learn about important general life skills like phone and internet safety. And most importantly, I’ve learned that maintaining friendships and feeling accepted has been such a key part of my growth.

I can't thank Danielle and the DramaWay team enough for all they've done for me over the years. They've helped me become the confident person I am today, and I'll always be forever grateful for that.
