BEYOND THE CURTAINS

NICOLE

AUTHOR & ADVOCATE

Hi, I'm Nicole, and I'm excited to tell you all how DramaWay has played a huge role in shaping who I am today.

I've been part of DramaWay since 1998 and it has been an incredible journey! DramaWay has given me the space to be myself, to express who I am, and to know when to take time for myself. Everyone  at DramaWay (like the facilitators, volunteers and my classmates) believe in me, see my potential, and give me the opportunity to keep pushing myself to the next level.

On top of  being involved with DramaWay, I'm very engaged in my community and I take on many roles including being the CEO of Nicole Flynn Enterprises, where I pursue my passions in photography, philosophy, and presentations. I am also the President of the Council for Community Living Ontario and  a graduate of Loyalist College with a General Arts & Science Diploma. I'm an author, an actor with Tweed & Co Theatre, a martial artist at Magwood Martial Arts, and a curler at the Land O'Lakes Curling Club. I'm also an international speaker and sought-after keynote presenter, advocating for various causes that are important to me.

The skills I've learned at DramaWay have been really helpful  in all my community work.

DramaWay supported me with my public speaking skills, showed me different ways to engage and captivate an audience, and taught me how to use body language, hand gestures, and emotions while on stage as a performer. It has helped me build up a strong sense of confidence and belief in myself, something I’ve noticed in all areas of my life! Being with DramaWay taught me so much about advocacy, communication, and the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

I’d love to share the sentiments about DramaWay from my book I wrote titled, “A Life Worth Living”:

Many times we wrote our own productions based on things we were going through in our lives, such as understanding emotion, or stress or relationships. Sometimes, the productions were our version of a popular show, like Grease, revised to fit us. There are multiple roles throughout life such as the politician, or the scientist, and we as artists worked to figure out how to become this person. We studied the characters and learned how to portray them. We wanted to learn how to show how they think, and we became this person... I loved every performance that we did. There were times we played with mythical creatures, such as fairies and nymphs. This gave us the freedom to illustrate a story through acting. We were free to interpret the character our way. One specific character that I portrayed was a challenge for me.

My roles in plays always used a lot of words, but I wanted to learn more about physical theatre. I was given the role of a fairy and had no words to say. I did not have lines and I had acting skills to rely on to illustrate the empowerful message. I was depending on the saying that a picture, or in my case acting is worth a thousand words. The role was my favourite because the lesson that I learned was about silence, holding the audience's attention and drawing mixed emotion from them. This is when I learned to make a connection with the audience and to draw them into my world.

DramaWay taught me about the many ways people are able to communicate, and to think out of the box, teaching me to be more creative with my own characters. When drama class was over, I would leave feeling light and lively. I felt vibrant with confidence and thankful for the exposure that I had working with my fellow actors and getting to know about their lives. This has enabled me to present, not only myself, but my drama family as an advocate to improve our circumstances. I know that I can get by, that I am able to stand up and speak for myself. DramaWay had raised the bar high, very high, because now I see the value of all people. I learned to recognize that society has a different perspective when it comes to valuing a person.”

Since joining DramaWay all those years ago, I really feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person. I feel more independent, more self-aware, and more compassionate towards others. I've learned the value of friendship and the importance of being there for my DramaWay friends and fellow performers, both on and off the stage. DramaWay has given me a safe space to express myself, to release my emotions, and to feel accepted for who I am.

DramaWay isn't just about acting and performing, it’s also about empowerment, inclusion, and community. DramaWay helps you believe in yourself and break down the barriers that get in the way of feeling confident. I'm so  grateful for everything DramaWay has done for me, and I'm proud to be part of such an inspiring and transformative community.

Thank you for your support! Together, let's continue to spread the message of inclusion and acceptance. Please GIVE today!
